HIALEAH (CBSMiami) – Miami-Dade police, along with Hialeah police, are investigating a shooting that left two young children hospitalized.

The girls, ages 6 and 8, suffered injuries to their thighs, but are expected to be OK. They remain at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Police say the shooting happened at the parking lot of the Rey Chavez Supermarket located on 17 St. and 8 Ave.

Marco Correa, an employee of the store told CBS4, "I was eating when it all happened. I heard a man was trying to steal a lobster tail and that the security guard had ran after him."

Police say a man was trying to steal from the supermarket. He then got chased by the security guard of the store.

The thief then ran to a car waiting for him in the parking lot. Inside of the car, police say, was a mother and two daughters.

It was when the vehicle took off, that the security guard fired shots. Police say the two girls were struck.

According to a Hialeah police officer, the mother of the children has been taken into custody.
