School Lockdown Lifted After Lauderhill Shooting
LAUDERHILL (CBSMiami) – A precautionary lockdown has been lifted from two Broward schools hours after a man was found shot in his car nearby.
The shooting happened sometime after 7 a.m.
Mary Carlton said she was awakened to the sound of gunfire.
"Like pow, pow, pow, pow," she told CBS4's Joan Murray.
Lauderhill police spokesman Constance Stanley said a man was shot multiple times in his car by the driver or passenger of a second car which had been pursuing him. While they're not sure where the actual shooting occurred, but the injured man crashed his car in the driveway of a house at 780 NW 35th Street.
The Carltons said when they heard the gunfire they hopped out of bed.
"I thought it was firecrackers because it was not that loud," said Herbert Carlton. "Then my wife said yes, that's shooting."
"It was very scary," said Mary Carlton, "I didn't know what was going on until we got up."
As arriving officers established a perimeter in an effort to catch the shooter, Broward Estates Elementary at 441 NW 35th Avenue and Parkway Middle School at 3600 NW 5th Court were placed on lockdown.
"We just wanted as a precautionary measure to make sure that no one, the suspects, were in the area, we wanted to make sure no one was in harm's way," said Stanley.
Lauderhill police said the injured man was taken to Broward General Medical Center as a "very critical trauma alert." They have not released the man's name or indicated what may have led to the shooting.
"We only have a witness who heard the shots go off and saw the victim's vehicle," said Stanley. "We don't know what happened prior to the shooting."
