Two Men Charged In Series Of Broward Robberies
FT. LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – Two men accused of robbing a Walgreens store in Ft. Lauderdale have also been charged with three other robberies in and around the city.
Robert Martinez-Valerino and Kyle Spellacy, both 19-years old, face a number of charges including armed robbery, robbery and possession of a controlled substance. Martinez-Valerino has also been charged with grand theft and attempted to elude a law enforcement officer.
The first robbery occurred at around at a 99 Cents Store on East Sunrise Boulevard on September 29th. Around 9 p.m., police said Spellacy walked into the business and approached the clerk. He then implied that he had a gun and demanded that the clerk open the register. He then began counting to ten. Fearing for his life, the clerk opened the register and Spellacy grabbed some cash and ran out.
According to police a witness, who was identified as Robert Martinez-Valerino, told officers that he was inside the store and saw the robbery. Martinez-Valerino reportedly said that he chased the man but lost sight of him.
Three days later, Ft. Lauderdale officers were called to a robbery of a Walgreen's on East Sunrise Boulevard around 3:30 a.m. Arriving officers immediately rounded up two suspects; one was Martinez-Valerino and the other was Spellacy.
Both Martinez-Valerino and Spellacy gave full confessions to the armed robbery of the Walgreens, according to police.
Robbery detectives also discovered that Martinez-Valerino and Spellacy were allegedly responsible for the armed robbery of the 99 Cents Store and two additional robberies in the City of Oakland Park and the City of Wilton Manors.
