Two In Custody After Police Respond To Burglary Call
SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE(CBSMiami) - Gunfire echoed across a Southwest Miami-Dade neighborhood as Miami-Dade Police were forced to fire on burglars after a SWAT team is called in when the criminals terrorize residents.
Chopper 4 captured dramatic images as one relieved resident was seen rushing from her home and into the arms of a Miami-Dade Police Officer who happened to be her goddaughter. Chopper 4 also captured the arrest of one of the suspects.
"I've lived here my whole life and this is the worst thing that has ever happened here," said one neighbor who identified himself as "Christian."
"Oh my God, I heard three shots and this neighborhood is normally quiet," said neighbor Judy Perez. She told CBS4's Peter D'Oench, "It's like boom, boom, boom. It's scary."
"I walked out of my door and heard the noises and they yelled at me, lock it, lock it. So I went back inside," said Ronald Torres. "What can you think when police say that to you."
Miami-Dade Police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta told D'Oench that the incident started as a 911 call about a burglary in progress at a home at Southwest 113th Street and 57th Terrace at 12:20 Thursday afternoon.
"Two males were seen running from the original location," said Zabaleta. "As they were attempting to flee, they tried to conceal themselves in a second home that was also occupied. We set up a perimeter, caught one suspect and then another who attempted to flee was caught within the perimeter."
"During the perimeter, officers were able to see a dark-colored, four door KIA with no tints. Shots were fired when that vehicle took off. We are now looking for a 3rd person who was in that car, the getaway car. So one suspect was taken into custody immediately when we responded and a 2nd one was arrested when we set up the perimeter," Zabaleta said.
"We are still speaking with victims and trying to determine if they made it inside both homes," said Zabaleta.
So far the two suspects have not been identified.
D'Oench also spoke with the Miami-Dade Police officer who embraced her godmother when she ran from her home. The officer, who has been with Miami-Dade Police for 18 years, told D'Oench that her godmother did not want to say anything right now about the incident.
Her godmother lives in the home that the SWAT team entered looking for the suspects who had fled.
Miami-Dade Police do not have a good description of the person driving the getaway car that took off.
