Two Dead In Small Plane Crash Off Key West
KEY WEST (CBSMiami) - Two bodies were recovered from a small plane crash off the northern coast of Key West Friday afternoon.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Becky Herrin, the circumstances surrounding the crash are unclear and a dive team is currently searching where the wreckage was spotted, about a mile and a half north of Key Haven.
Officials are working to confirm the victim's identities. They say the plane may have crashed before Friday.
Original reports indicated the plane was a single engine Cessna 172 registered to Dean & Blaylock, Inc., which is described as a domestic profit corporation in Miami.
CBS4 news partner the Miami Herald reported late Friday that the plane was likely an ultralight or experimental aircraft.
The Herald reported the first call of the crash came in around 1 p.m. from passing boaters.
It was the fifth plane crash in the Florida Keys since September, but the first in which people died.
Crews will bring the crashed plane to shore Saturday morning.
