MIAMI (CBSMiami) - You would think that people catching a flight out of Miami International Airport would leave their guns or machetes at home.
Yeah, you'd think.
On Tuesday, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at MIA showed off the guns, stun guns, grenades and machetes their agents collected from people's carry on luggage as they passed through security check points.
"Knives of all sizes, machetes, brass knuckles, other marshal arts tools," said Sari Koshetz with TSA.
The TSA said their agents seized 17 guns, many of the loaded, since the beginning of the year.
At MIA this year, they've seized more than thirty tons of combustibles people have tried to carry on or check in their bags.
So how much stuff did they collect? Would you believe 7,400 pounds of voluntarily abandoned property, like knives and brass knuckles, and 63,300 pounds of hazardous materials, such as gasoline and bleach.
If you have to travel with your gun, knife or machete, it should be packed in your checked luggage. Guns must be unloaded and declared at check in.
Passengers are reminded that the 3-1-1 rule still applies to carry-on bags. Liquids, gels, aerosols, creams and pastes must be 3.4 ounces (100ml) or less; must be in 1-quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag and 1 bag is permitted per passenger.
Medications, baby formula/food and breast milk are allowed in reasonable quantities larger than 3.4 ounces and they don't have to be in the zip-top bag, but they must be declared for inspection at the checkpoint.
