TS Maria Passes Well North Of Puerto Rico
MIAMI (CBS4) – The center of Tropical Storm Maria will pass well north of Puerto Rico on Sunday.
At 5 p.m., the center of the system was about 115 miles north-northeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico. The storm's maximum sustained winds were 60 mph; tropical storm force winds extended outward 200 miles to the north and east of Maria's center.
The storm was moving to the west-northwest near 9 mph.
There are currently no watches or warnings in effect for this storm but those in the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeast Bahamas are urged to closely monitor its progress.
The National Hurricane Center forecasts that Maria will turn to the northwest on Sunday night and a turn to the north-northwest on Monday night. On this track, the center of Maria will gradually move away from the extreme northeastern Caribbean islands and pass well east of the southern Bahamas by Monday night into Tuesday.
Rainfall from Maria is expected to be up to 4 inches, with up to six inches in isolated areas, over the Lesser Antilles, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
