TS Gordon Strengthens In Northern Atlantic
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Tropical Storm Gordon neared hurricane strength as it continued to move away from the U.S. in the north-central Atlantic.
At 11 p.m. Thursday, the seventh named storm of the 2012 Atlantic Hurricane Season was about 1315 miles west of the Azores. Packing maximum sustained winds of 70 mph, with higher gusts, the storm was moving to the northeast at 17 mph.
Gordon is forecast to take a turn toward the east. This track will keep it over the open waters of the northern Atlantic for the next few days. Some strengthening is expected over the next 48 hours and Gordon could become a hurricane by Friday.
Tropical Storm Gordon currently poses no threat to land.
