Katia Now A Category 1 Hurricane
MIAMI (CBS4) – Tropical Storm Katia turned into Hurricane Katia late Wednesday night.
At 11 p.m., the center of Katia was about 1165 miles east of the Leeward Islands. The system's maximum sustained winds had increased to 75 mph, making it a Category 1 hurricane. The fast moving storm is moving to the west-northwest at 20 mph. Hurricane force winds extend 25 miles from the storm's center.
Currently there are no watches or warnings in effect associated with this storm.
Katia is forecast to continue its west-northwest trek over the next 48 hours with a gradual decrease in speed. The National Hurricane Center predicts it could become a major hurricane by this weekend.
