Katia Continues Steady Northwest Movement In Central Atlantic
MIAMI (CBS4) – Hurricane Katia hasn't strengthened in the six hours since it once again became a hurricane at 11:00 Friday morning.
At 11:00 p.m. Friday, the center of Katia was about 575 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands. The system's maximum sustained winds increased to 75 mph as it moved to the northwest at 12 mph.
Hurricane force winds extend 35 miles from the center, while tropical storm force winds extend 175 miles from the storm's center.
Katia is forecast to continue its west-northwest trek over the next couple of days with a gradual decrease in speed. The National Hurricane Center said some strengthening is likely in the next 48 hours. The hurricane is expected to pass well north of the Leeward Islands by Sunday.
Currently there are no watches or warnings in effect associated with this storm.
