Tropical Storm Debby Blamed For Near Record Tornadoes
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - If you think South Florida was spared for the most part by Tropical Storm Debby, think again. The National Weather Service says the drenching tropical system produced 10 tornadoes over the southern part of Florida, tying a record set almost half a century ago.
Meteorologists said June 23rd saw two confirmed tornados in Collier County, while a whopping 8 tornadoes were reported June 24th in one four hour period from Glades to Miami-Dade counties.
That tied a record set in 1964 for tornadoes on a single day over South Florida, set during Hurricane Isabel.
Despite the tornadoes, Debby will be remembered mostly for it's rainfall.
Debby dropped more than a foot of rain last week over parts of north Florida. Some parts of the Florida Panhandle reported getting up to 2 feet of rain.
Roads are still closed in parts of North Florida as a result of Debby's rainfall, and 7 deaths have been attributed to the storm. Cleanup efforts are still underway.
