Tropical Storm Chris Begins Turn Toward Northeast

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Tropical Storm Chris has begun its turn away from land as it churns away in the mid-Atlantic off the Canadian coast.

Chris, the third named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, is located about 635 miles southeast of Cape Race, Newfoundland.

The storm has maximum sustained winds of 60 miles per hour with some higher gusts.

The storm is moving to the east at near 22 miles per hour.

The National Hurricane Center reports as Chris heads into cooler waters it has probably reached its peak intensity.

Chris forecast to become a post-tropical cyclone Wednesday night or Thursday.

CBS4 Meteorologist David Bernard said, "We're not paying a lot of attention to this. Its all the way up near Canada, headed East, and a danger only to shipping."
