Tropical Storm Bret Weakens Slightly, Leaves Bahamas
MIAMI (CBS4) – Tropical Storm Bret continues to move away from the Bahamas, weakening in strength. All Tropical Storm Warnings for the islands have been discontinued as of 5 p.m Monday.
At 11 p.m., Tropical Storm Bret was about 160 miles north of Great Abaco Island.
Bret's maximum sustained winds increased to 60 mph as it continued to move north-northeast at near 7 mph. The storm is forecast to continue a slow drift northeastward and then begin to accelerate away from the northern Bahamas on Tuesday and is then expected to weaken again come Wednesday.
Drier air to the north of Bret is working its way into the circulation. The storm is unlikely Bret will reach hurricane status.
South Florida will continue to see "indirect effects" from Bret. On Sunday the northwest wind on the backside of Bret helped push our high temperatures into record breaking upper 90s. That wind flow also allowed thunderstorms to march into Metro Broward and Miami-Dade Sunday evening.
South Florida is slightly ahead of schedule with Bret in the Atlantic. On average, the second named tropical storm occurs around August 1st.
