Tropical Disturbance Brewing In Caribbean
MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – The National Hurricane Center has given a strong area of low pressure in the Caribbean a 80 percent chance of becoming a tropical depression or higher in the next 48 hours; and South Floridians need to keep an eye on the development of this system.
The system is about 300 miles east of Martinique and a hurricane hunter aircraft is investigating the disturbance to determine if the system has a center of circulation on the surface.
The NHC said that if the system becomes a depression or tropical storm Monday, tropical storm warnings will be issued for parts of the northern Windward Islands and the Leeward Islands. Showers and thunderstorms extend to from the Lesser Antilles eastward a few hundred miles.
For South Florida, any potential impact of this storm is still close to a week away. But, as of now, computer models show the system coming very close to South Florida by next weekend.
By then, most models have the system as either a tropical storm or a category one hurricane. If the system becomes a tropical storm, it will be named Emily.
