Trial Set For Canadian "Sex Tourist"

FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami/AP) - A trial date has been set for a Canadian man accused of making a trip to South Florida to have sex with what he thought was an underage teenage boy.

Miami U.S. District Judge K. Michael Moore scheduled trial to begin January 12th, 2015 for 47-year old Rene Roberge.

On October 9th, Roberge sent an email to an undercover Florida Dept. of Law Enforcement agent who was posing as the father of a 14-year old son on a social networking site . In the email, Roberge allegedly said he would be willing to travel to Florida to meet with the agent and his son for a sexual encounter.

Roberge made hotel reservations in Pompano Beach and arrived from Montreal on Sunday, November 9th, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. In his luggage, law enforcement officers found the lubricant, condoms, and gifts.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents also allegedly found child pornography on Roberge's tablet computer.

During questioning, Roberge reportedly admitted to traveling from to Florida to engage in sexual activity with a boy he believed to be 14 years old. He's being held without bail as a risk of flight and danger to the community.

Roberge is facing two charges that carry a mandatory minimum 10-year prison sentence and potentially life behind bars.
