Traffic Alert: Roads Slowly Reopening Hours After Miami Beach Gas Leak
MIAMI BEACH (CBSMiami) – Some roads in Miami Beach are slowly beginning to reopen hours after being shutdown early Friday morning following a gas leak.
A construction crew working on traffic lights and sidewalk repair drilled into a 6-inch gas main creating a hole and release of natural gas along Collins Avenue and Indian Creek Drive around 6:00 a.m.
Collins Avenue and Indian Creek Drive was closed between 23rd through 27th Street for hours but currently, only one lane remains blocked at Collins Avenue between 23rd Street and Indian Creek Drive and one lane remains blocked on Indian Creek Drive between SR-A1A/26th Street and 27th Street.
Alternate routes include Pine Tree Road, Alton Road and Prairie Avenue.
Police said there were no evacuations.
"The fire department is taking proactive readings every 20 minutes to gauge the level of gas in the air. TECO has been out all night working to cap the gas main break. That is all part of the function here and safety is our number priority," said Miami-Dade Police spokesman Ernesto Rodriguez. "The fire department is trying to reassure everyone. We do believe it's safe for you to stay inside your home but we ask that the windows remain closed. If you do have an elevated odor of gas in your home, call the Miami Beach Fire Department and we have crews that will come and take those readings."
