Trader Joe's Raw Walnuts Recalled For Potential Salmonella Contamination

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Trader Joe's has issued a recall for raw walnuts which have the potential of containing salmonella.
There have been no illness complaints related to the products but, out of caution, they have been recalled and pulled from store shelves.
The potential for contamination was noted after routine testing by an outside company which then contacted the Food and Drug Administration.
Consumers that have bags with specified "Best By" dates and Lot Numbers are urged not to eat it, throw it out or return it to Trader Joe's for a full refund.
The products are packaged in clear plastic bags with the UPC Codes printed on the back. For the Raw California Walnut products, the "BEST BY" dates and Lot Numbers can be found printed on the back of the packages. For the Organic Raw Walnut products, the "BEST BY" dates can be found printed on the front of the packages.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems.
Healthy persons infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
