Toys In The Sun Run Roars Down I-95, I-595
FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) – Thousands of bikers toting presents for some very special kids hit the road Sunday morning for the annual 26th Annual Christmas Toys in the Sun Run.
The run began at the Mardi Gras Casino in Hallandale Beach. From the casino, the route traveled westbound Pembroke Road to Interstate 95 northbound, then west on Interstate 595, exiting at Northwest 136 Avenue in Davie. The procession continued west on State Road 84 and turned right (north) on International Drive then went west into Markham Park. Northbound Interstate 95 beginning at Hallandale Beach Boulevard was temporarily shut down along with Interstate 595 westbound to Northwest 136 Avenue.
An estimated 30,000 motorcyclists took part in the run.
At Markham Park, the bikers were greeted with a full day of live music, featuring Bret Michaels of Poison, food and merchandise vendors, a huge motorcycle show and a car show. The event cost $10 and one unwrapped toy per person or $20 without a toy.
Proceeds from the event will go to the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in Hollywood. Donated toys are distributed to needy children in South Florida.
