Tornado Warning Issued As Storm Floods South Miami-Dade
PERRINE (CBSMiami) - Torrential rains from a weather system moving through South Miami-Dade have flooded streets in Cutler Bay and Palmetto Bay, and spawned two tornado warnings after forecasters spotted signs of a possible funnel cloud around Black Point Marina, headed north. Those warnings were canceled shortly after 9:15 pm.
Forecasters urged people in Cutler Bay, Pinecrest, and Sound Miami to be aware of the storm, issuing two tornado warnings as the slow-moving weather system headed northward.
Several residential streets in Cutler Bay filled with nearly knee deep water. Torrential downpours quickly flooded the area surprising those who live there.
Laura Reynolds took a ride with her dog Roxy in a kayak down the street in front of her home.
"I figured the best way to get around was to kayak instead of walk through the water," she chuckled. "Honestly the street was like this in Katrina. That was the last time I saw it like this and the last time I went kayaking after the storm too."
Neighbors took to the roadways with their pants rolled up and walking barefoot to assess the situation. Ray Latin took photographs with his camera. "This is really high," said Latin.
Some cars were stranded after they flooded out trying to drive through the high waters. Others plowed through the flooding in pickup trucks.
"We probably had like four or five inches pretty quickly and it was fun," said Lenny Wilcox, a neighbor. "I had a friend come by in his big truck and we watched all they people stranded and you know what are they doing out there?"
The water didn't appear to make it all the way up into any of the homes and did not seem to cause any major damage.
Forecasters issued a flash fllod warning for parts of Miami-Dade until early Monday morning, when the woredst of the rainfall was expected to have passsed.
