Top Marlins Prospect Heaney To Join Rotation
MIAMI (AP/CBSMiami) — The Miami Marlins called up top prospect Andrew Heaney on Monday to join their struggling rotation, along with three other young players in a midseason roster shake-up.
Heaney's contract was selected from Triple-A New Orleans, where he went 3-0 with a 2.74 ERA in four starts. The left-hander went 4-2 with a 2.35 ERA in nine games this year at Double-A Jacksonville.
Heaney, 23, was the ninth overall pick in the 2012 draft. He'll try to shore up a rotation rocked by the loss last month of ace Jose Fernandez to season-ending elbow surgery.
Despite the setback, Miami began the week only one game out of first place in the NL East.
The Marlins also recalled right-hander Anthony DeSclafani, outfielder Jake Marisnick and first baseman Justin Bour from Triple-A New Orleans.
Left fielder Christian Yelich was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained lower back, which has sidelined him since Friday.
Veteran pitchers Randy Wolf and Kevin Slowey were designated for assignment. The 37-year-old Wolf, trying to make a comeback from the second Tommy John surgery of his career, went 1-3 with a 5.26 ERA in six games.
Miami optioned infielder Donovan Solano to New Orleans, and catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia was transferred to the 15-day disabled list while he recovers from a concussion.
