Toddler Hit & Killed By SUV In Walmart Lot

MARGATE (CBSMiami) – A two-year-old girl was hit and killed in the parking lot of a Walmart in Margate Monday morning.

Sara Merant, 2, was hit a Honda CRV driven by Sheila Nusbaum in front of a Walmart at 5555 W. Atlantic Boulevard, according to Margate Police Sgt. Efrain Suarez. The SUV's driver stayed on the scene.

"It's very hard for me," a heartbroken Kerlange Merant sobs as she talks about her little girl.

Merant said she brought her toddler to the store to buy some food, when the two got back to the car, Sara got inside, while Merant returned the shopping cart to a nearby rack.

Moments later, Merant heard someone scream and ran to find her daughter on the ground.  Now she relives that horrible moment, wishing she could change it.

"I park my car right here and to push the shopping cart ," she gestured, showing a short distance from where she parked. "I said, 'Why God I don't leave the shopping cart?"

Witnesses described the scene as heartbreaking.

"I saw police tape everywhere and the ruckus," said witness Jenna Liptan. "It's terrible and so sad when any child is hurt."

The girl was rushed to the nearest hospital Northwest Medical Center to be stabilized and was then going to be airlifted to Broward General Medical Center.

Merant died before she could make it to Broward General.

"Today, I don't know why this happened to me," cried her mom.  "I cannot survive!  It's very hard.We're going to sleep in the house without my daughter."

Nusbaum has not been charged at this point and was cooperating with police.
