KEY LARGO (CBSMiami/AP) — A man faces child neglect charges after a toddler was found wandering alone at a John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in the Florida Keys.
Monroe County Sheriff's spokesman Adam Linhardt said in an email that 46-year-old Francis William Dunn was arrested Saturday night.
He's charged with child neglect and resisting arrest.
Linhardt says a couple at the campsite told deputies the child had been "abandoned" but the man had just returned before deputies arrived. They said he appeared to have been drinking.
Deputies found the man and the child inside a tent. The child was put in a deputy's vehicle and later taken into care of the Florida Department of Children and Families.
DCF workers said the child was covered in mosquito bites and wearing a soiled diaper that was falling apart, noting that it appeared the child had not eaten in a while.
While on scene, deputies were notified of a black GMC Yukon Denali that was later determined to belong to Dunn.
It was found crashed in the roadway leaving the park, with significant damage and several of its part littering the road.
An attorney for Dunn wasn't listed on jail records.
