Toddler Drowns In Pool At A Tamarac Home
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A toddler drowned in a pool during a family gathering in Tamarac Saturday afternoon, investigators with the Broward Sheriff's Office said.
"We're always having fun, always in the pool," Marc Desinat said. "Main reason why I got the house."
Desinat lives at the home along NW 71st Ave. where a 23-month-old drowned. The boy, named Johnny Davoer, is the nephew of Desinat's girlfriend.
"He was full of life," Desinat said of Johnny. "He just came in first thing he saw, he saw me. Gave me a big kiss. After that, I kissed him and went to work. I said hey, give me a kiss, I don't know when I'm going to see you again."
The Broward Sheriff's Office received a call of an unresponsive toddler just before 6 pm.
Investigators said the entire family was out enjoying a day of sun and swimming.
"He was playing safely in the shallow end of the pool," BSO Spokeswoman Dani Moschella said. "His parents were sitting on chairs nearby. The whole family was playing in the backyard today. This was certainly not a case of neglect. This was just a baby who fell silently under the water and nobody noticed him."
BSO deputies and the Tamarac Fire Department responded within minutes, but could not revive the boy, who was just three weeks shy of his 2nd birthday.
Detectives think Johnny was under the water for several minutes.
"We have a devastated family who's wishing they could turn back time and pull that baby out of the water a little sooner," Moschella said.
"Embrace your kids everyday," Desinat said. "You never know. Kids used to bury their parents. Now parents are burying theirs."
With the holiday weekend under way, the Broward Sheriff's Office wants to remind you to be extra cautious, especially with children, around water. At the same time deputies were at the home on NW 71st Avenue, they received a call of a 3 year old nearly drowning in a canal in Tamarac. That child is expected to be ok.
