Tips To Help The Unemployed Get Hired
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Even though new claims for unemployment are dropping, 10.6 percent of the people in the state of Florida are still unemployed.
So, where are all the jobs?
South Florida resident Evelyn Roman was a mortgage broker she worked for her own company for 13 years but has been unemployed for three years. She also lost her home, and felt like her life was spiraling out of control.
"Oh my god, I can't afford that," said Roman. "I can't afford to fall apart because I have to stay focused."
Desperate, Roman connected with Nicole Carter, a professional development coach who helps unemployed people better their chances of getting hired.
Carter says a lot of people aren't getting employment, "due to a lack of consistency monitoring and evaluating their effectiveness in three major areas," said Carter. "It is what makes you the most competitive."
Those areas include hire-ability, marketing-ability, and favor-ability:
Hire-ability includes your experience, knowledge and flexibility with salary and relocation.
Marketing-ability includes making an impression with former companies, peer professionals, and industry influencers.
Favor-ability includes how you are viewed by former bosses, colleagues and industry influencers.
"That ability to develop solid relationships within your industry," said Carter.
Job seekers can try those tips Friday, October 28th at the South Florida Diversity Jobs Expo. The theme is "Why Am I Still Unemployed?"
The fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Signature Grand Hotel in Davie. It is free and open to the public.
