MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Three men were in the wrong place at the wrong time when gunfire erupted on Key West's famed Duval Street early Monday morning.
"I was walking down Duval Street last night and I got shot," Reid Ogden said from his hospital bed at Ryder Trauma Cetner.
Ogden is feeling pretty lucky right now. At About 1:30 a.m. on Monday, his night of fun in Key West turned to terror.
"I heard what sounded like fire crackers, I thought fireworks were going off a little celebration, and I ended up seeing a guy run past me. I heard another pop and that's when my forearm went numb," Ogden said.
It all began when Ogden and a girl he was taking out for the first time were walking down Duval Street passing Charles Street.
At the same time, down the street, Sugarloaf Key resident Derek David, 34, got into a fight with a woman in Rick's Bar.
Surveillance video from the bar shows David at one point pushing the woman to the ground. David then grabbed the woman outside where two unidentified men tried to help her, according to Key West police spokeswoman Alyson Crean.
At one point, Crean said David pulled a gun and started shooting at them. The bullets missed his intended targets but did hit three bystanders: 54-year-old Scott McBride, 35-year-old Brenden Boudreaux and Ogden.
"I knew something was up with my arm, it felt a little heavy and numb as soon as it happened, we just hauled," Ogden said. "I'm good with seeing other people's blood, when I see my own blood I start getting a little woozy."
After realizing he was hit, Ogden ran looking for help. That's when he ran into Emily – she's trained in first aid.
"He came upstairs and said, 'I've been shot, I've been shot,' and I just do what I do. I'm like, 'You're fine, you're not going to die.' But he thought he was dying," Emily said.
McBride was treated and released. Boudreaux and Ogden were airlifted to the Ryder Trauma Center.
Fortunately, no one died – and it could have been much worse.
Just around the corner, Kenny Chesney fans packed Duval Street – camping out overnight for a free concert.
"I was not expecting my Keys' trip to end up like this, for sure," Ogden said.
David was taken into custody and faces three counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
