Three In Custody After Wild Chase On SW Dade Canals
SW MIAMI-DADE (CBSMiami) – The men were taken into custody after leading police on nearly an hour-long chase through several southwest Miami-Dade canals.
Around 1:20 a.m., an a police officer who lives in area of SW 74th Street and 8th Avenue heard gunfire and went outside to see what was going on. He traced the shots to a boat in a nearby canal. Inside the 12-foot boat were three men reportedly armed with at least one rifle. He called it in to police dispatch.
When officers arrived and approached the boat, the men took off. Miami-Dade police launched a helicopter and officers in the area assisted in the chase. Police officers in cars and stationed on bridges tried to stop the boat at several locations only to be fired on. Several officers did fire back. None of the officers were hit.
"These individuals were shooting at officers who were driving along the road. This is all a residential neighborhood that this occurred in," said police spokeswoman Rosanna Cordero-Stutz. "They were putting the community in grave danger by shooting at the officers in such a manner."
It all came to an end near Snapper Creek Drive and 112th Avenue where the men surrendered. Neighbors in the area were shocked when they learned what had happened.
"Oh my God, it's unbelievable, I can't believe it that this happened here," said Olivia Alfrado.
"Last night I heard a lot of chaos. I heard two big bangs and I heard the helicopter," said Juliana Almeida.
One was treated for a minor injury, possibly the result of a bullet graze. At least one firearm was recovered.
This is the sixth police involved shooting in the last 30 days.
The names of the men have not been released.
