Thieves Steal Broward School Bus Batteries
FT. LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – More than a dozen Broward school buses were going nowhere fast Monday morning after it was discovered their batteries were gone.
Monday was the first day back to class after the two-week winter break. School district spokeswoman Nadine Drew said when the bus drivers showed up for work at the North Satellite Terminal, at 2300 NW 18th Street in Pompano Beach, 16 found their vehicles had no batteries.
Each bus has two batteries so a total of 32 were stolen.
Drew said a look around the terminal found an area where the fence had been cut. She didn't know, however, exactly when the batteries were taken.
There were some minor delays with the buses going out because replacement batteries had to be installed.
The Broward Sheriff's Office said whoever took them presumably wanted to sell them for scrap for the lead weight. Sheriff's investigators have already visited eight scrap yards in Pompano Beach and Deerfield Beach.
