Texas Drilling Company Shuts Down Disputed Well
NAPLES (CBSMiami/AP) — A disputed southwest Florida oil well is shut down until further notice.
Texas drilling company Dan A. Hughes Co. announced the shutdown of the Collier-Hogan well Tuesday. This comes just days after announcing it had abandoned plans for two exploratory oil wells near endangered panther habitat in the area.
Also Tuesday, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection announced it would sue the company for failing to comply with a list of previous demands. An email from the agency says the lawsuit would seek additional financial penalties and demand the shutdown of all the operations at the Collier-Hogan well.
A company spokesman said in a prepared statement that shutting down the well was an operational decision by the company and not because of any outside request.
