Testaverde Selected For College Football Hall Of Fame
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The University of Miami will add at least one more member to the College Football Hall of Fame Tuesday when Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Vinny Testaverde becomes a member of this year's class of nominees, according to CBSSports.com.
Testaverde will be the 10th Miami Hurricane, sixth player, inducted into the Hall of Fame. Miami, which had a drought of new members a few years ago, has now had six inductees in seven years.
In Testaverde's senior season at UM, he was 175-276 for 2,557 yards, 26 touchdowns, and just nine interceptions. He won the Heisman Trophy, the Davey O'Brien award, the Maxwell Award, the Sammy Baugh trophy, Walter Camp Player of the Year Award, and was a consensus All-American.
Testaverde beat out Temple's Paul Palmer, Michigan's Jim Harbaugh, and Oklahoma's Brian Bosworth for the Heisman Trophy in 1986.
Testaverde's college career came to a memorable end in the 1987 Fiesta Bowl against second-ranked Penn State. Testaverde's Canes team committed seven turnovers with the Heisman winning quarterback throwing a game-sealing interception at the end of the game.
The former Cane was taken with the number one overall pick in the 1987 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Testaverde would struggle his first few years in the NFL until he made it out of Tampa Bay, which was arguably the worst team in the 1980's.
Testaverde became a journeyman quarterback in the NFL during his 21 year pro football career. Testaverde challenged a record held by George Blanda when he threw 35 interceptions during his second season in the pros. Blanda holds the all-time record for interceptions in a season with 42.
Throughout his career, Testaverde played for the New York Jets, Bucs, Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Ravens, Carolina Panthers, Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots. For his NFL career, he threw for 46,233 yards, 275 touchdowns, 267 touchdowns, and had a won-loss record of 90-123-1.
