Hearing For Teen School Bus Shooting Suspect Postponed
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A hearing in the case of a 15-year old Homestead boy, jailed for the accidental shooting of a 13-year-old girl on a school bus, has been postponed.
Jordyn Howe, who is a student at Somerset Academy Silver Palms, reportedly shot and killed Lourdes Guzman-DeJesus on Nov. 20th.
Howe was supposed to learn Tuesday whether the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office would charge him as an adult, however, Judge Orlando Prescott accepted a request to postpone the hearing for 9 days.
The next hearing was scheduled for Dec. 20th.
Neither Howe nor his parents were in court.
Howe is charged with manslaughter and carrying a concealed firearm. Police said Howe was "remorseful" and the shooting appeared to be an accident.
The shooting took place on a school bus at SW 296th Street and SW 137th Avenue. In addition to Howe there were eight other students on the bus including Guzman-DeJesus, who was headed to Palm Glades Preparatory Academy and her seven year old sister who attends Summerville Advantage Academy.
Sources close to the investigation told CBS4 News that Howe took the .40 caliber handgun from the home he shares with his mother. The family reportedly did not realize that the gun was missing until they got a call from police.
Sources said Howe told investigators that he knew the gun was loaded and even passed it around the bus before the gun went off and struck Guzman-DeJesus in the neck.
Guzman-DeJesus, who also went by Jina, was airlifted after the shooting to Miami Children's Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The driver and the other students on the bus were not injured.
