Teen Curator Debuts Exhibit At Miami Museum
MIAMI (CBS4) - Andrew Reed knows a lot about contemporary art. So much so, that the 17 year old Ransom Everglades High School senior has been called a protégé in the art world.
Beginning Saturday night and for the next month, Reed is presenting an art show at the Snitzer Gallery in Wynwood called, "Things Beyond Our Control," which makes him one of the youngest curators anyone has ever heard of.
"A lot of people would say that art fills up a blank space on a wall," said Reed. "I think art, a lot of the time, addresses questions in our lives and makes you think about things we otherwise would not think about."
Andrew was first exposed to art even before he was out of diapers.
"I'm sure that when I was a baby they were pushing me around in strollers in museums!" said Reed. "Probably when I was 10 I began to appreciate it."
He purchased his first piece at age 10, that's when his mom Stefanie , who is the business herself, started seeing his curiosity become a passion.
"I am proud. It's the next step and the culmination of him seeing art, collecting art and learning about art" said Stefanie Reed.
Andrew, who recently returned from Art Basel in Switzerland, chose all of the pieces in this exhibit, which debuts on Saturday at the Wynwood Art Walk. Gallery owner Frederic Snitzer said Andrew has become so knowledgeable, giving him the opportunity to curate a gallery showing was easy .
"He's almost become a resource for me, said Fred Snitzer. 'Last year, at Basel, I said 'you know Andrew you should curate a show- you're there'. So he was excited and that's how it began."
Reed doesn't know if he'll do this as a business when he's older, but he is positive that art will continue be a major part of life in the future.
