Teen Critically Injured In Bus Accident Going Home

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Two months after a Pompano Beach teen was critically injured after he was run over by a bus, he's received some great news – he's going home this week.

Jerry Cunningham, 14, was trying to catch a Broward County transit bus on Sample Road on May 10th to his middle school, when his arm became stuck in the door as the driver pulled away.

Cunningham, who fell and was run over, suffered a traumatic brain injury and multiple broken bones.

"The second day he was here, he called me dad," said Cunningham's father, also Jerry Cunningham, with tears in his eyes.

It is small moments of success like that that Mr. Cunningham says he lives for.

Although slow, Cunningham says his son's progress has been steady.

"I feel like dancing. He is amazing, and he gets better every day, but you have to be with him every day to notice."

In March, all bus drivers were warned in memo that "No operator will move any bus with passengers in front of the standee line". On the bus' security video, driver Reinaldo Soto is seen driving away with two women in front of the line.

After the accident Soto can be heard yelling, "where did he come from", clearly unaware that Cunningham was hanging onto the door.  Sotostopped the bus, ran off too check on the boy then quickly got back inside to call for help.

Cunningham spent a month at Broward Health Medical Center before he was transferred to Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital on June 13, unable to walk and talk. There he underwent intense physical, speech and occupational therapy and has made tremendous progress.

This Thursday he will be discharged but will continue outpatient therapy.
