Teen Accused Of Carrying 30 Lbs Of Coke In Cake Mix Boxes
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Authorities in Miami are trying to figure out if a British teen is a very crafty baker, or an amateur drug smuggler.
Ayesha Olivia Niles ,18, is facing drug trafficking charges after she allegedly carried 30 pounds of cocaine stuffed in 24 boxes of cake mix into Miami International Airport on October 21, according to CBS4 News partner The Miami Herald.
The teen arrived in Miami on an international flight from Jamaica last Friday. The drugs were discovered when her luggage was screened by federal customs agents.
The teen, originally from London, reportedly told authorities that she did not know what the substance was.
"She suspected that the activity she was involved in was suspicious but she did not question it," according to the report.
She turned 18 while in custody, but was held as a juvenile because she was underage when arrested.
"This young woman had her 18th birthday in a foreign jail, far from her home and her family, because she thought she could smuggle almost 30 pounds of cocaine through Miami," Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernández Rundle said Wednesday. "Sadly, she almost becomes a poster child for how easily the drug trade can corrupt our youth."
