Tebow Headed To The Jets
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A bizarre day surrounding the NFL career of Tim Tebow took another strange turn Wednesday evening when ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Tebow would be allowed to pick the team he will be traded to next.
Not too long after that, Schefter revealed that Tebow is indeed headed to the Jets and that the deal is confirmed.
The Jets had originally acquired Tebow early Wednesday afternoon from the Denver Broncos in exchange for draft picks.
Then, the trade was off after the Jets found complex language in Tebow's contract.
Schefter reported late Wednesday afternoon that Tebow has $5 million worth of recapture language in his contract. That means the Jets would have to pay that money back to the Broncos as part of the trade.
According to Schefter, the same issues prevented the Jacksonville Jaguars from acquiring Tebow before the Jets.
The full package will see New York send a fourth-round pick and a sixth-round pick in the 2012 draft to the Broncos and the Jets will receive Tebow and a seventh-round pick.
New York also agreed to pay half of the $5 million in compensation back to Denver that was in dispute.
It ends a wild day for Tebow who started out the day as a Bronco, then became a Jet, then was a Bronco again, and finally a Jet to end the day.
For Tebow, it's a perfect fit because new Jets offensive coordinator Tony Sparano is well-versed in the single-wing offense, also known as the Wildcat.
The Jets will now have the ability to line Tebow up in the Wildcat alongside Shonn Greene and try to give opposing defensive coordinators headaches.
"Tim Tebow deserves an enormous amount of credit for what he accomplished and how he carried himself during his time with the Broncos," John Elway of the Broncos said. "His time in Denver will always hold a special place in Broncos history."
