Tannehill Settling In At Training Camp
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Now that the Miami Dolphins have their entire quarterback contingent into training camp, the question again turns to who will be the starting quarterback for Week 1 of the regular season.
Conventional wisdom would put the best odds on either veteran David Garrard or Matt Moore landing the starting job, but rookie Ryan Tannehill hasn't give up the dream just yet. Tannehill comes from Texas A&M where he played under Dolphins offensive coordinator Mike Sherman's offense.
Theoretically, he knows a majority of the offense. But, executing it at the collegiate level and at the pro level are two different monsters. In offseason work, Tannehill at times looked slow to get the ball out and read the coverages slowly. Both of those are recipes for disaster in the NFL.
Still, Tannehill thinks he's right in the thick of the quarterback competition.
"I may be naïve, but Coach [Sherman] hasn't given me any indication I'm not," Tannehill told CBS4 news partner the Miami Herald. "I'm going to go out there every day and…hopefully win the job."
So far, according to the Herald, Tannehill has been playing primarily with the second team. Coaches have lauded his one day of work and said he will get some work with the first-team offense in the coming days.
Tannehill is the team's future at quarterback, but it's unknown when that future will take over the starting lineup with the Miami Dolphins. With limited time available in training camp, Tannehill will have to make the most of every opportunity he receives.
