Syria Support Rally Held At Miami's Torch Of Friendship
MIAMI (CBS4) – More than one hundred people took part in a rally Sunday in Miami to show their support for the people of Syria.
Staged at the Torch of Friendship on North Biscayne Boulevard, the rally was put together by the South Florida chapter of the Syrian American Council (SACSF) which wanted to bring awareness to the massacres going on in Syria.
"The Syrian American community is calling upon the Obama Administration and the UN to take emergency measures to ensure humanitarian relief and protection to the Syrian people," said SACSF in a written release. "The South Florida Syrian community invites all people of conscience and all freedom supporters to join us during this historic rally in South Florida to promote the Freedom of the Syrian people."
Last week Senator Joe Lieberman said he believes the U.S. should provide weapons to the Syrians to fight President Bashar Assad who he called dictator.
China has said it believes there is a peaceful solution to the Syrian crisis while Britain's foreign minister said he feared the Middle Eastern country will slide into civil war.
Assad's regime has pursued a harsh crackdown against an uprising that began last March. A U.N. estimate in January says more than 5,400 people have been killed.
