Swimming Still Off Limits At Causeway's Hobie Beach
MIAMI (CBS4) –Planning to go for a swim this weekend in Hobie Beach? You may want to think twice.
Officials still have not lifted a swimming advisory from Hobie Beach on Rickenbacker Causeway after the water was deemed unsafe to swim in.
Miami-Dade's health department has issued a swimming advisory for Hobie Beach Wednesday after samples taken from the water show a higher amount of bacteria than what is deemed safe under federal guidelines.
The advisory issued recommends not swimming at the location. Those who ignore the warning face an increased risk of illness, particularly for susceptible individuals.
Since August 2002, the health department has conducted beach water quality testing at 17 sites, including Hobie Beach. Water samples taken from the sites are tested for enteric bacteria, which is normally found in the intestinal track of humans and animals, and which may cause human disease, infections or illness.
The prevalence of that bacteria is an indicator of pollution from feces, which may come from storm water run-off, wildlife, pets and human sewage.
