Sweetwater Looks To Decrease Taxes For Disabled Veterans
SWEETWATER (CBSMiami/The Miami Herald) — The city of Sweetwater could make it that much more beneficial for some veterans living in the city.
Commissioners plan to vote on the first reading of an ordinance that will give disabled veterans an additional discount on their home property taxes.
According to CBS4 news partner, The Miami Herald, the discount will apply to municipal taxes and is on top of a discount already given by the Miami-Dade County Property Appraiser's office.
The discount will be equal to the percentage of a combat-related disability as determined by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs. The widow or widower of a service member can also benefit from this exemption.
Commissioners will meet at 8 p.m. Monday night at their chambers at 500 SW 109th Ave.
Mayor Manny Maroño is proposing the ordinance to give extra help to those who served our country.
"In addition to helping veterans pay less taxes, my staff is looking into community outreach programs that will further help veterans by helping them find resources on how to further their education, job placement and housing," Maroño told the paper.
