SWAT Uses Gas To End Stand Off On Miami Beach
MIAMI BEACH (CBSMiami) – A Miami Beach man has been charged with aggravated battery with a firearm following a SWAT team standoff which started over some loud music.
It started around 6:30 a.m. with a fight between tenants in an apartment building at 840 16th Street.
Police said the fight began when one tenant knocked on his neighbor's door to ask him to turn down his music.
"He went over there trying to do the right thing and asking him to bring it down. He was welcomed with what he thought was a rifle or shotgun," said Miami Beach Police officer Bobby Hernandez.
The complaining neighbor ran for his life. Other neighbors thought they heard a gun blast.
"We thought we heard a gunshot. We heard this loud bang and my wife was like, 'wow that was scary'," said resident Aaron Sugarman.
Police have not confirmed whether a shot was fired but neighbors were astounded by the news.
"This is ridiculous how people react from just dumb stuff," said neighbor Ricardo Piedra.
Negotiators talked to the man with the gun and the loud stereo for two hours.
"They were unsuccessful. They handed the scene to the SWAT team, the SWAT team made entry and removed him from the apartment without incident," said Officer Hernandez.
The SWAT team used tear gas and concussion grenades to flush the man out. Every window in the apartment was blasted out.
In the end, nobody was hurt.
