Suspension Will Cost A-Rod Millions
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez was hit with a 214 game suspension Monday afternoon, but it's his pocketbook that may take the biggest hit.
A-Rod signed a 10-year, $275 million contract with the New York Yankees a few seasons ago. The Yankees own his rights through the 2017 season when Rodriguez will be 41-years-old.
Currently, A-Rod is owed $28 million in 2013, $25 million in 2014, $21 million in 2015, and $20 million in both 2016 and 2017.
If the suspension was upheld in full today, it would cost A-Rod more than $30 million in combined salary from this year and next year.
The longer A-Rod stretches out the appeal process and keeps playing, the less money he may lose in the end.
But, A-Rod doesn't have to worry about going broke anytime soon. He's still owed $40 million, which will grow to $50 million when it's fully paid, by the Texas Rangers in deferred money.
The money was deferred to help seal his trade to the Yankees. The Rangers will be paid to A-Rod from 2016-2025.
