Suspended Mayor Pizzi Receives Order From FL Supreme Court
MIAMI LAKES (CBSMiami) – The Florida Supreme Court has directed Governor Rick Scott to "show cause" as to why the suspension of suspended Miami Lakes Mayor Michael Pizzi not be revoked.
Pizzi was acquitted of federal bribery charges and requested Miami Lakes reinstate him as Mayor. He sued to be reinstated to the office.
The Florida Supreme Court found the Pizzi petition demonstrated a basis for relief.
The Governor's office said it will respond to the order by an October 14 deadline.
Miami Lakes responded to the order by the Court and said it will wait for the Governor's response, but until then, the election of Wayne Slaton through a special election is also still in effect.
Town Attorney Raul Gastesi, Jr. stated in a press release, "We are very pleased with the Order issued by the Florida Supreme Court today. We continue to assert that the special election held on October 1, 2013, pursuant to the Town Charter, must be respected. The voters in Miami Lakes have spoken and we firmly believe the Court will agree."
