FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – A teenager believed responsible for burglarizing homes in the upscale Riverland section of Ft. Lauderdale is in the Broward jail charged as an adult.
16-year-old Albert Rizo Maradiaga is charged with burglarizing two homes in May.
Residents say he is responsible for many more break-ins and that, until his arrest as an adult, he has been in and out of the juvenile system.
The victim of one of the May burglaries tells CBS4 she returned home to find her house ransacked.
"He took a laptop, Wii system, jewelry and shoes. Anything you could stuff in a backpack," she says.
Detectives told her they identified Maradiaga through his fingerprints.
Maradiaga's name has come up many times on a neighborhood website called Next Door.
Riverland residents have been sharing information to try to curb the number of break-ins.
One couple told CBS4, "You have to be vigilant. A lot of us have installed cameras on the street as well as canals."
