Suspect sought in death of 80-year-old woman struck by hit-and-run driver in Broward
MIAMI - Authorities are searching for the driver who struck and killed an 80-year-old woman in a hit-and-run Wednesday night.
Deputies with the Broward Sheriff's Office responded shortly before 8 p.m. to reports of a crash in the 3800 block of North Powerline Road.
Investigators said Barbara Price was crossing the street outside a designated crosswalk when she was hit by a vehicle that fled the scene.
Oakland Park Fire Rescue responded and pronounced Price dead at the scene.
Detectives later identified the vehicle involved as a light blue 2005 to 2009 Land Rover Range Rover Sport SUV.
Investigators say the SUV's front passenger side struck Price, throwing her off the roadway.
Surveillance video captured the moment the driver sped away without stopping.
Floyd Carter, a close friend and tenant of Price, said he is devastated by her death.
"My heart is breaking, man. She was my best friend," Carter said.
Price, who lived just a short walk from the Kwik Stop where she often shopped, was well known in the community.
Carter said he frequently gave her rides because her husband suffers from dementia and vision problems.
He also expressed frustration over reckless driving in the area.
"They go down this street late at night, 70, 80 miles an hour," Carter said.
Traffic homicide investigators are reviewing evidence to track down the driver.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact Broward Sheriff's Office at 954-321-4841 or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest.
"I hope they catch him. He has to pay for what he did," Carter said.
