Suspect In Woman's Death Extradited To Miami
MIAMI (CBS4) – The man considered to be the 'prime suspect' in the disappearance and murder of a Miami Lakes woman is now back in South Florida after his arrest in Managua, Nicaragua last month.
Roque Torres, 60, was arrested on January 16 after an extensive manhunt that led investigators to Central America.
Miami-Dade Police have charged Torres with second degree murder in the death of his his ex-girlfriend, Marisol Ramon. He is being held on no bond.
"It's a lie. It was an accident!" he said as he was paraded in front of reporters by Nicaraguan police after his arrest.
Police have been looking for Torres since the disappearance of Marisol Ramon, 40, in May, 2010.
Ramon, described as a loving single mother of two, disappeared around 10 p.m. on May 26th at the Royal Oaks Shopping Plaza, just off the Palmetto expressway in Miami Lakes.
Security video showed her Toyota arriving at the mall, followed by a Yukon SUV driven by her ex-boyfriend, Torres. Ramon's car never left the parking lot and Torres disappeared the night Marisol did.
"June 16th was when we discovered the vehicle that belonged to Roque Torres. At that time we were able to locate blood within the vehicle. A few days later, on June 28th, was when we discovered her body. And then through DNA testing, matching the blood and the blood from her body, was when we determined that it was in fact Marisol," said Detective Baez who thanks the community for help in Torres' arrest.
"She meant everything to me, our relationship was the best I've ever had with any other person. She wasn't just a mom to me, she was a best friend," said Marisol's son Stephan Ramon, who described the relationship between his mother and Torres as on again, off again.
The extradition process has been initiated to transfer Torres to South Florida where he will be charged with second degree murder.
