Suspect In UM Student Hit & Run Arrested In NYC
MIAMI (CBS4) - A man suspected in the hit and run crash that critically injured a University of Miami student has been arrested at an apartment in New York City.
Luis Felipe Moya, 24, was arrested Tuesday morning. Authorities say the apprehension was a joint effort by South Miami Police, City of Miami Police, and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force.
Moya is accused of being behind the silver Mercedes that struck UM student Eliza Gresh, 19, at the intersection of South Dixie Highway and SW 57th Avenue on April 27, 2012.
Police say Moya took the damaged car to the body shop, lied to the mechanic about the accident and requested to file an insurance claim to fix the car.
"He didn't want to talk too much about what happened. I asked him a couple of times what he had hit and he was very evasive. He changed the conversation," Body shop owner Tony Castro told CBS4's Gio Benitez.
Castro reportedly told Moya that he needed his mother to file the claim, because the insurance for the car was in her name.
Moya's mother was later arrested and charged with insurance fraud.
Moya is currently in custody in New York and will be extradited to Miami to face charges.
