Surveillance Footage Shows Violent, Fatal Hialeah Hit & Run Crash

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A woman is dead and a man was rushed to the hospital after police say they were hit by a driver who wouldn't stop in Hialeah.

The driver accused of leaving the scene of the crash didn't get very far as police arrested him just blocks away.

It happened on East 5th Avenue and 41st street at approximately 7:40 p.m. on Monday.

CBS4 obtained surveillance video showing the violent collision, and it's not easy to watch.

A vehicle is seen moving towards the camera when another car speeds into the frame and strikes the first vehicle.

Both then skid off the road, with the first vehicle rolling onto its side following the powerful impact by the car that appeared to be speeding.

Angel Maza, a witness, told CBS4's Peter D'Oench, "I was playing dominos and I heard the nose. Police got there in seconds. The white car came and took the stop sign. I think it's a pathfinder. He hit the pathfinder and the other car. When the guy crashed here he took off running but Hialeah police are very effective. They caught him."

Maza said, "The bad thing about these situations is that when something is broke, you can fix it. But when someone is dead, that is a different situation. There are plenty of accidents here at this intersection. I've seen a lot of them. Three days ago we have another one."

Rafael Dominguez, a neighbor, told D'Oench, "It's a racetrack here. There's a lot of people who don't respect the stop signs. I think this is terrible. It is criminal what he did. You have to be careful."

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene while the male was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center, according to Hialeah Fire Rescue.

His condition is unknown at this time.

Authorities have not released information on the identities of the victims or the suspect.

Charges are pending.
