Surfs Up On Miami Beach - Again
MIAMI BEACH (CBSMiami) – Surfers can once again 'hang ten' off Miami Beach.
On Wednesday the city ended it's short lived ban on surfing and other watersports, like paddleboarding and kite surfing, north of 3rd Street. The city began enforcing laws which prohibited surf, paddle, or kite boards north of 3rd Street last after getting a number of complaints, according to CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald.
Violators faced a $500 fine or 30 days in jail. City officials noted they never issued any fines or made arrests.
After hearing from those who like to ride the waves and even lifeguards who had to enforce the ban, the city decided to end it – at least for now.
"We're conscious of the fact this was not handled appropriately and that surfing has always been allowed in Miami Beach," Commissioner Michael Góngora told the paper.
The city plans to discuss its regulation of surfing other watersports at an upcoming commission meeting.
