Supreme Court Takes On Gay Marriage Debate

MIAMI ( CBSMiami) -- The debate on gay marriage is all about the Constitution of the United States of America and if it supports same-sex couples' right to marry. That's what the Supreme Court must decide.
They heard arguments Tuesday and will announce their ruling in June.
Jeff and Todd Delmay spoke to CBS4's Cynthia Demos over Skype. The Delmays are from Hollywood and were among the crowd in front of the Supreme Court on this historic day.
They were one of the first gay couples to marry in Florida but now the ruling that allowed them to marry is on appeal.
A decision by the Supreme Court will decide once and for all if their marriage and all other gay marriages are legitimate.
'If this happened five years ago, I'd be nervous but in the last 10 years this issue has gained momentum," said Todd.

Justice Anthony Kennedy seems to hold the swing vote.
The Christian Coalition released a statement on the matter saying, "Today, a majority of U.S. Supreme Court justices, even Justice Stephen Bryer, a member of the court's liberal wing, rightly expressed skepticism on declaring homosexual so-called 'marriage' a constitutional right and imposing that redefinition on all fifty states. We agree, however, regardless of the Supreme Court's ultimate decision, this issue, just as abortion, will not go away."
The debate also involves local leaders.
Former North Miami Mayor Kevin Burns has been with his now husband for 31 years. He legally adopted his 13-year old in Vermont when she was born.
Gay adoption was legalized in Florida a year ago. If the Supreme Court rules in favor of gay marriage, they could adopt as a couple.
Now, it's the same waiting game but this time waiting for the ultimate ruling.
"This is our story. We're your neighbor, your family, your coworker," said Todd.
It will be a long 6 to 10 weeks of waiting for the final ruling to hear how the United States feels about gay marriage.
