Super Bowl LIV Host Committee Unveils Plan For Florida Coral Reef Restoration
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Miami Super Bowl Host Committee announced plans for a special coral reef restoration project.
The committee will be planting one hundred coral reefs in honor of the NFL's 100th season.
The Super Bowl LIV Legacy Reef is a collaboration of the committee, the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science, NFL Green and several others.
It is not just a celebration but a very important initiative of the Ocean to Everglades Project that is part of Super Bowl 54 environmental campaign.
A briefing session took place at the Frost Museum, detailing the restoration project.
"So we're able to take this initiative that we have with the Super Bowl create this awareness and have something that is so important to our community," said Michael Zimmer, President of 2020 Super Bowl Host Committee. "So we plant these 100 corals, they grow and they're the base of our ecosystem in the ocean."
The host committee has linked up with several organizations as well as a team of returning combat veterans, called the Force Blue, who are sent to environmental conservation missions.
These veterans will be the ones diving and planting the one hundred corals that will bloom new marine life and leave a lasting legacy.
Coral reef restoration projects have become a growing part of Miami's environmental conservation efforts.
The global event that is the Super Bowl is expected to help gather attention and support for the cause in hopes of people taking action.
