MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) — Seeking to protect the coral reefs near Port Everglades which may be damaged if a dredging project moves forward, an environmental and a recreational dive group have filed suit in Miami federal court.
Miami Waterkeeper and the Diving Equipment and Marketing Association argue that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers approved the project without using the latest science to determine its effects on nearby coral reefs.
The reefs off Port Everglades are home to dozens of species of coral and are popular diving destinations.
Miami Waterkeeper executive director Rachel Silverstein says they don't want to see the same reef damage that occurred during the Port of Miami dredging.
The Corps did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
